I covered my ears with my hands and backed away from the wall. Their collective voices were deafening. Their words put my hair on edge and my heart pounded in my chest. I couldn’t listen to them any longer. I was about to turn and run when the shattering of glass stopped me in my tracks. The withers raised their swords, smashing the glass wall block by block.

I gaped in horror as they swarmed into the cave, their speech growing ever louder and quicker. I tried to clamber my way to the portal, but the skeletons blocked it off. They had me surrounded in seconds. Trembling, I drew my sword. This was my only way out. They came at me, their bones clanging heavily. My sword swung at them in frenzied slashes. When there was a gap in the crowd I dove through it, putting some distance between the mob and myself. I positioned myself to take them on in a straight line. One by one the withered skeletons crumpled to the floor. I dodged and countered their attacks until finally I stood alone in a sea of bones. Exhausted, I stumbled through the portal and fell onto the earth.

This ordeal was what made me question my status as a hero. Did I just fight monsters or forsaken souls? Could I have done something to save them? What I had just witnessed was beyond some game. This was not something a mere hacker could achieve. Good lord, those voices echoed in my mind. Wanting to get as far away from that portal as possible, I swiftly climbed out of the ravine and headed home. I stood in my living room, lost in thought, munching on a cookie. When my meal was finished, I grabbed one of my books from the chest. I opened it and stared at the blank page. I had wanted to write down all of my questions and concerns for my next encounter with the hacker, but the sentences wouldn’t form properly in my head. I grumbled and closed the book. As I did so, I noticed an empty slot in my inventory had been filled. Inside, were three skulls from the wither skeletons. I didn’t even realize I had picked them up.

As I stared into the face of the decaying skull, its words once again reverberated in me. They had played a game and lost. A feeling I know all too well. But why did they have to suffer? Losing a game didn’t warrant such a cruel punishment, right? I saw in the skull a kindred spirit. These were who the ghasts pity so. And I didn’t blame them. I certainly would cry for tormented souls. Crying isn’t enough, though. Some action had to be taken. I knew there was little I could do, but for my own peace of mind, I had to do something.

I marched through the clearing and onto a hill. A single birch tree was perched on the top. At its roots, I dug three holes, each two blocks down.
